[[The Last Chapter XI]]

Each year, June always promised to be a fun month. How could it not be fun when it's the school holidays?

It was also the month when Jaime would celebrate his birthday. He wasn't one to fuss about his own birthday though. It was just another day to him. But this year, he would be celebrating the occasion a few days in advance with his classmates at their very first class chalet.

But little did he realised that his classmates would be planning a rather wet surprise for him...

"Are you guys gonna get some alcoholic drinks?" asked Jenny.

"Oh sure. Hey guys, let's all cycle to the store?" suggested Harry.

The guys agreed and took their rented bikes out. But instead of travelling straight to the store, they went around the cycling route a few times. Harry stopped for awhile to pick up a call.

"Hey guys, Jenny doesn't want any drinks anymore. Shall we head back?"

Women, Jaime thought. The guys cycled back at a leisurely pace. Everyone was standing by, waiting for the guys. It was a strange sight for Jaime, but he passed the matter off.

As soon as he got off his bike, Jaime felt something smack into his face. The next thing he knew, he was drenched.

"Happy birthday!" laughed Celine. She had the honour of dunking Jaime first.

The rest soon joined in and started raining Jaime with water bombs. All he could do was to run around and duck the water bombs.

"Not fair! You guys never provide me with any ammunition to defend myself!"

"Cest la vie!" shouted the class. Everyone was enjoying themselves bombing Jaime.

~~~
Jaime came out from the shower, but the euphoria outside hadn't died down. The girls were making a mickey out of Celine, who celebrated her birthday just under a week ago.
"Here's a piece of cake for you."
Celine handed a large slice of chocolate cake with a succulent-looking cherry to Jaime.
"You want the cherry? I got a little phobia against cherry..."
"Really?" said a surprised Celine. She took the cherry from Jaime and popped it into her mouth.
"Thanks a lot for the cake," smiled Jaime.
[[The Last Chapter X]]
Punctuality neever found its place in Jaime's dictionary. That was until he met Celine. Never once was he early for appointments with his friends. At least he made it a point that he wouldn't be the one waiting. Everyone knew him to be a perennial late-comer.
They were scheduled to meet at 8am, but Jaime was already at the void deck by 7:30am. He sat himself at the tiled benches, and waited for the time to come.
It was ten minutes past eight. There was still no sign of Celine. Could she still be asleep? Jaime didn't want to wake her up if she was, therefore he continued to wait.
The time was now 8:30am. Maybe she thought he wasn't there yet. Jaime decided to send Celine a message. It didn't take Celine long to reply.
"You're here already? So sorry! I'll come down now."
Jaime focused his line of sight at the lift. Momments later, the doors opened. It was Celine.
"Good morning! Been here for long?" Celine was in her usual sunshine self.
"A few minutes only," lied Jaime. He didn't want her to feel bad about making him wait. "Hope I didn't wake you up so early in the morning."
He passed the cake and present to Celine.
"Happy 18th birthday," smiled Jaime.
"Thank you so much! You really shouldn't have gone through all this trouble..."
They spent a few minutes chatting with each other before Jaime left. Once on the bus back home, his eyes gave in and fell into a deep sleep.
[[The Last Chapter IX]]
"I never knew it would be so tiring baking a cake."
Jaime was whipping the butter and sugar together. He would had gone for an easier and faster way of using an electronic mixer, but he stubbornly insisted on manually doing everything.
Sometimes he questioned himself on his intellectual level. It was not as if any normal person could be able to tell apart cakes made using electronic mixers or by hand. How dumb Jaime felt about himself sometimes.
But at least he was really sincere, if any scant consolation mattered.
Will looked at the clock. It was fifteen minutes before twelve midnight.
"Jaime, don't you want to be the first to send her your birthday message?"
Jaime checked the time. Oh shucks, I nearly forgot!
"Thanks for the reminder! I'm so caught up with everything here that I almost forgot."
For once, it didn't take a long time for Jaime to type his message. He had prepared it almost two days ago. A Singaporean advertising himself at his best. Or what some people think, worst.
Time was starting to run out. Jaime had arranged to meet Celine at 8am and he had slightly more than seven hours left. All he could do now was to let the dough sit for about an hour before he could start baking.
3am and the cake was finally ready. It didn't look exactly like what confectionaries could do, but Jaime had tried his best. Four hours to go, and he spent the time wrapping the present. He was too afraid of falling asleep.
At 7am, he finally left Will's house.
[[The Last Chapter VIII]]
April 12 2003 would be one of the most memorable days in Jaime's life. It was the first time he would go out with Celine on a date. The date was a simple affair. They had pasta for lunch, and Jaime actually finished his food slower than her. Celine was not a fast eater, neither was Jaime a slow one. But he was too mindful not to look messy while eating. His friends had commented he looked untidy and ungracious while eating the night before.
Jaime didn't plan to do much. They spent the whole afternoon walking around town, looking for a nice cake for a classmate whose birthday falls on next week, and chatted about anything and everything. It was nothing like what they were in school. Strangers to the both of them would had assume the two did not know each other, let alone classmates.
"I'm going off at the next stop. You know, you didn't have to take the long trip with me."
Jaime could never had allowed her to take the trip alone. It was an opportunity for him to spend more time with her. Every single second spent with Celine was so precious to him. He probably deserved to be castrated if he had taken the other way home.
"Can I walk you home later?"
"Erm...you don't have to, you know. I feel bad enough that you had to take this trip when you could have taken the shorter one and got home earlier..."
Jaime simply couldn't afford to let such a chance slip away. He insisted on walking Celine home, and she eventually relented.
The walk to Celine's apartment was about ten minutes. It was not short, but Jaime always wished it was longer. He remembered by heart the landmarks Celine told him he would pass by while walking to her home: two basketball courts and a coffeeshop.
"Do you wan to take a bus back to the train station? I'll wait with you at the bus stop," offered Celine.
"Sure," replied Jaime. He secretly wished the bus would take an eternity to come. Disappointingly, it arrived after about seven minutes.
"Give me a message when you get home?" asked Jaime. Celine nodded.
Jaime boarded the bus reluctantly. As he gazed at Celine from inside the bus, they waved each other goodbye. Even as the bus moved off, he couldn't take his eyes off her, even for a second.
[[The Last Chapter VII]]
It has almost been a year since Jaime got to know Celine. Nine months in fact. Never had Jaime incurred a higher SMS usage than he did in the last six months. Time flies when you're having fun, they say. For Jaime, time couldn't have flown by more quickly than before.
It had become a habit for Jaime to see Celine in school almost everyday and to message her, whether through SMS or online chatting. Actually, it had become an essential routine in his life. Just like how a heroin addict is addicted to the drug.
However, Jaime still couldn't muster enough courage to talk to her face-to-face in school often. Everytime he sees her in school, his mind froze. His brain and heart wouldn't cooperate with each other, and the words failed to come out from his mouth. It was something that never happened to him before. Not with all the other girls that he knew.
For the first time in his life, Jaime knew that he had fallen. Fallen for Celine. Fallen in love. So deep that he knew it would not happen again in his life with another girl. Not with his ex-girlfriends. Not with any other girls he might know in future. Certainly not with any of his female friends.
But questions were always running through his mind. Am I good enough for her? How does she feel about me? Would there be a chance for us to be together? What would happen if we got together and then split up?
Each and every of these questions left Jaime less confident than ever before. He was so afraid of losing Celine, even as a friend.
~~~

"Hi there...will you be free after test next Saturday? Wanna ask if you're free to go out for lunch..."

Finally, Jaime was satisfied with the message. He had typed almost ten messages, trying to sound as best he could. It might not had mattered so much, but to Jaime, everything he said had to sound proper. He was perhaps a little too conscious.

One minute. Two already gone. Jaime stared at his handphone with excitement and anticipation. He had long began to start imagining how everything would go next week...

"Beep...beep..."

Though Jaime always try to respond as fast as he could to any message he received, he couldn't be faster than he was when replying to a particular someone.

"Yup, I think I will be. Why ask me out all of a sudden?"

"Hmm...my mum gave me a reward for doing well in a test, so wanna buy you lunch?"

It was an obvious lie, and she might just see through it. But Jaime thought it was a bad idea to ask people out for no reason. He didn't know how to tell her why he wanted to ask her out. At least that excuse sounded logical.

"I see. So nice of your mum. Tell me more when you decided where to go?"

For the rest of the day, Jaime couldn't stop smiling. How he wished for the next weekend to come quickly. He had never looked forward to a day more than this.

[[The Last Chapter VI]]

"Hello Jaime. What do you want to see me about?"

Celine was surprised. What could that guy be up to?

"Erm...have you had your lunch yet?"

"Yup, had it with the girls just now. How about you?"

"I...erm...yeah, I had my lunch too," replied Jaime. He wished so much to slap himself for stuttering.

Celine was beginning to find everything so amusing. Here is a guy who is stuttering while talking to her. And he came all the way here just to ask her if she had her lunch? So silly.

"Actually...I have something for you."

Jaime handed the box to Celine. At least he managed to get his hands not to tremble.

"For me? That's nice. What's the special occasion? It's not my birthday yet, you know." smiled Celine.

"Erm...just wanna wish you a happy Valentine's Day. Hope you'll like it."

"Wow. You shouldn't have. Happy Valentine's Day to you too!"

"Thank you. I won't hold you up any further. See you during Econs later."

"Sure. See you later. Thanks again!"

~~~
Inside the air-conditioned canteen, the girls were eagerly anticipating Celine's return. Everyone was guessing what she was given. Roses? Chocolates? Or maybe diamonds?
As Celine walked back to the table, the girls, who just couldn't control their excitement, pestered Celine to reveal the contents of the box.
"Open it quickly! We are so eager to see what's inside!"
It was strange that everyone seem so excited, even more so than Celine. She opened the box, and it revealed some cookies neatly wrapped.
"Homemade cookies! Thet are in hearts and stars! He's such a sweetie!" exclaimed Sally.
"Hey," said Joyce,"there's a piece of paper below! Let's check it out!"
Before Celine could do anything, the girls had taken hostage the piece of paper and were reading out the contents to Celine.
"Oh my god!" gushed Joyce. "He is so in love with you!"
Everyone gave Celine a collective "aww...so sweet" look, and Celine couldn't help but turn pink in her face. Did that guy mean everything he wrote in the poem?
~~~

The clock showed 1pm, and it was time for Econs class. As usual, the guys were the first to be seated in the classroom. Jaime was dreading the arrival of the girls.

No longer than five minutes the girls arrived at class. Celine was one of the last few to enter, and took her seat as usual, looking a little embarrassed.

The girls couldn't resist giving Jaime that look, and began teasing him.

"Oh Jaime, could you write me a poem and bake me cookies too?" gushed Joyce.

"I want a poem too!" added Mandy. "You are such a sweetiem such a SNAG! Aww..."

Jaime could only manage a weak smile. There was barely any room for him to hide his embarrassment at all the flattery, or teasing. He wished he could dig a hole in the ground and hide his head, just like an ostrich.

That was the first ever Valentine's Day that meant a thing to him.

[[The Last Chapter V]]

The school would never be more happening each year than on February 14th. Each year, a charity bazaar would be set up at the foyer not only for students to put their entrepreneurship skills to use, but also raise funds for the school needy fund.

"Any roses for your girlfriend, sir?"

That was about the hundredth time Jaime had heard that phrase since morning. He and his friends were looking around the bazaar, curious as this was the first time they had seen such an event in a school.

Jaime politely declined the offer, though he was scorning inside. Can't they see I have no girlfriend? I'm walking around with four guys, for goodness' sake! Do they have to rub it in?

"Jaime, not giving your cookies yet?" teased David.

"Yeah, go on! You biased chap, we haven't got any!" added Harry.

There was still about an hour before the next class. Come on man, it's now or never. Jaime had been telling himself that for the last ten minutes.

"All right, I'll go now. Erm...Will, come along with me? I'm scared of going alone..."

"Come on! Be a man! She won't eat you up! Though I know you'll love it if she did!" joked Ivan.

The four guys roared out in laughter. Clearly, Jaime didn't quite enjoy that joke.

Will finally gave in. "Ok, I'll tag along. But just as a spectator, huh?"

Jaime nodded. At least that is better than nothing.

"Good luck, Jaime! Bring us some good news!" the rest of the three cheered.

~~~
"Get your legs moving, Jaime. You aren't such a slow walker!"
Five minutes had gone by, but both Jaime and Will were not even halfway through the journey to the next canteen.
"Hey man, it won't take five minutes to reach that canteen. We have taken five but we're not even halfway there!"
Jaime's legs were wobbling. His heart pounded harder with every inch he got nearer the canteen. He was wondering how he should give the box to her, what he should say, whether his hair was in a mess...
"Can you help me pass it to her?"
Will gave Jaime a knock on the head. "Pick up some courage! It won't take a year to pass her the cookies."
"But..."
"All right. I'll call her to meet you outside the canteen? That is as best as it can get."
Jaime nodded his head. At least I don't have to face the other girls. You can do it!
Ten minutes later, Jaime finally met Celine.
[[The Last Chapter IV]]
One box of flour, a packet of sugar, a can of chocolate powder, one block of hard butter, some crushed almonds...
"Got all of the ingredients yet, Jaime?" asked Will.
"Yeah. I'm almost done. Let me go through my checklist again? Don't wanna miss anything out and make another trip here."
Jaime had never made cookies for anyone in the whole of his seventeen-and-a-half years. Maybe some pastries during Home Economics in his secondary school days. But all went into his stomach by the time class ended. He was one to appreciate his culinary skills very much. Besides, twenty minutes of recess time would never be enough to fill the stomach of a hungry and growing boy.
First, make a well in the centre of the flour. Add in some water and gradually fold the flour in...
Baking cookies don't look tough, but it could potentially be a tiring affair, with all the manual folding of flour and whipping of butter. Jaime followed the instructions carefully, conscious not to miss a step. Everything was going smoothly, and having Will to guide him along helped too.
"Here's a few shape moulds. Pick some you fancy for your cookies?"
Jaime took a look and quickly decided what he wanted. Hearts and stars. They probably would make a nice combination.
An hour gone and the cookies were ready. Chocolate cookies with almonds. Jaime and Will sampled a piece each. It tasted pretty okay. She'll probably like it.
Jaime cut a piece of clean filter wrap and used it to wrapped his cookies. Eight hearts and eight stars. That was about as much as his box could hold.
"Don't forget that poem of yours," grinned Will.
Jaime frowned. Once again, he was being teased. Well, after a month or so he had gotten used to it. Carefully, he put the piece of paper at the bottom of the box, placed the wrapped cookies on top of it and tied a ribbon over the glittering pink box.
[[The Last Chapter III]]
"In this situation, linear communication is disadvantageous because..."
Fullstop. Done. Last question completed. Time to get out of the lecture hall.
It was a slightly warm Saturday morning. Thank god for the cooling air-conditioner in the lecture hall. Having to go back to school on a weekend for test can be so dampening for the spirit.
It was a good thing the school allowed students to leave once they complete their papers. Beats staying in the hall and looking at everyone desperately squeezing every ounce of brain juice left trying to remember what they mugged for the last few days in preparation for the test. Especially when you haven't done much studying as the others.
The clock had struck 10:30. Test was officially over and everyone streammed out of the hall, discussing answers to the various questions. Some looked jubilant at getting the correct answer to the toughest question. Some had the word "disappointment" written all over their faces. Others, like Jaime, simply couldn't be bothered.
Jaime hated waiting at the bus interchange for his bus in the late morning. It's bad enough having to squeeze with so many people. Worse of all, those aunties had just finished their shopping sprees. At the nearby wet market. Darn...that stinky fishy smell...
Ten minutes and the bus had yet to arrive. Jaime whipped out his handphone, and began typing a message.
"Hi...on your way home now? How was the test just now?"
It can get morale sapping whenever one talked about tests and exams after school, but at least that's an excuse to start a conversation, isn't it? Jaimie thought. Something had to start somewhere.
Soon after, the bus arrived. Jaime managed to get a seat. It always pays to be one of the first few people in the queue. Seats were guaranteed. As he was about to rest himself on the bus cushion, he felt a vibration in his right pocket.
One message received. He opened the inbox and gleamed instantly. It was Celine's reply.
[[The Last Chapter II]]
3pm and it was a hot Wednesday afternoon. Unlike most other days, Jaime was alone after school. Everyone else seemed to have something on. He was thankful, though, that he's going home. It had been a long day, and his mind felt pretty drained.
As he approached the bus stop, someone familiar caught his attention. A closer distance and he recognised the girl. It was Sarah, his classmate.
"What a surprise! Going home so early today?"
Sarah seemed surprised to bump into Jaime too.
"Yup. Gonna go home get some rest. How about you? No date?"
"Nah," replied Jaime, "Feeling kinda tired. What bus are you taking? 300?"
"Yup. Changing bus at the terminal. You?"
"Many choices, but I'll take 300 today. Have to change buses later too. And you can have me for company!"
"Really?" laughed Sarah. "Then I owe you a treat for that huh?"
"You bet," winked Jaime.
Bus 300 soon pulled over at the bus stop, and both of them got on the bus.
~~~

Conversations on bus trips can be such fulfilling moments, as Jaime soon found out. Both he and Sarah had plenty to chat about. School, life, friends and...

"So, you haven't got a girlfriend?" asked Sarah.

"Nope, I wished I was that lucky to have one."

"Things like these don't happen because of luck. It's about feelings, sincerity and opportunity. You must have someone in mind now."

"Erm...well..." Jaime hesitated. Don't tell me she know about it? I haven't even let a single soul know!

"You must have one," teased Sarah. "Don't tell me. Let me guess."

"Actually..."

Sarah cut short of Jaime's sentence. "Is it Celine?"

Damn. Jaime couldn't believe it. How did she know? She couldn't be so lucky to get it right on her first guess! Jaime didn't know what to say. All he felt was a slight burning sensation in his face and head.

My god! I'm turning red! I can't be blushing now...

"Ha ha. I must have got it right! You're turning so red!"

"Erm...how did you know?" asked Jaime, looking puzzled. "You made such a lucky guess..."

"Or rather, an intelligent one," replied Sarah. "Don't you think you can escape stealing glances of her during classes and lectures. Others might have missed it, but not me."

Darn it. So it was that obvious. Fancy being caught in the act. So embarrassing!

"Tell me, how long have you felt this way? I'm so curious!"

"Erm..." Jaime was still feeling so shy.

"C'mon. I won't tell!"

[[The Last Chapter I]]

Realised I have not so much to write about nowadays, plus the free time I have in office most of the time...so I've written a story. Ayy...it's someway from completed, and I guess it's gonna be long? So yeah...probably post a part of it everyday on this blog. Ok lah...my writing skills are not that good, but well...if you like read on. If you don't then don't read lah. (=

~~~
"Promise...me...that...that...you will...find your...true...happiness..."
Those were his last words.
The ambulance sped along the highway, rushing desperately to reach the hospital to save the man. But alas, he breathed his last, holding on to her hand and clutching his wallet on the other.
"No! Please! Don't go! Wake up...you can't do this to me..."
Inside the ambulance, it was dead silence. Except for her cries. She shook him vehemently. Everything in front of her eyes were all disbelieving. So disbelieving.
~~~

"Hi everyone. My name is Celine. I am formerly of Townsend Secondary School and my hobbies include reading and listening to slow and romantic music."

That voice seemed to arouse Jaime from his slumber. That voice. It sounded so much like an angel singing. Not that he ever heard an angel sing before, but it was nonetheless so captivating.

Jaime's eyes began scanning around the room. Who was that girl that just spoke? He was already forming an image in his mind of how she looked like. Long and dark flowing hair, bright eyes, sunshine smile, a good...

David nudged Jaime, interrupting his thoughts abruptly.

"Hey, that girl who just introduced herself," he whispered, gesturing Jaime towards the girl opposite him. "She looks like she's very helpful and easy to bully. Looks like life here would be easy if we strike a good relationship with her. She'll help us with all our work."

Jaime almost gave David a shot in the arm. So nasty of him, he thought. Shifting his glance towards the girl, he was mesmerized. Almost immediately.

That girl. She was just like what he thought. She was not the prettiest of the lot in the room, but there was something so special about her. Something that made Jaime's heart melt in an instance. Made him weak in the knees. Sent his thoughts into the wildest and most beautiful dreams he could ever have...

~~~
"Oh dear. We need to submit that VCD as part of the submission. It's with Bel, and she's not here today."
The group was left scratching their heads. None of them had Bel's number.
"You girls know of anyone in class with her number? We could just hand up the VCD tomorrow separately," asked Jaime.
The girls shook their heads in unison. But Joyce suggested that Celine might have her number.
"Hey Jaime, why don't you try asking Celine? I think she has Bel's number."
So Jaime went across the room, beginning to type a message to Celine. Strange enough, his fingers were trembling as he typed the message on his handphone. Three sentences took him five minutes. It wouldn't have taken a minute in any other circumstances.
That was the first message he sent to her.
[[Over and done...but still it lingers...]]
Actually I don't know why I'm writing this entry. Have nothing particularly to talk about. Oh yeah...you'll probably wanna ask me how it went last night. It juz...well...went like perhaps any other night. Only difference is I got to see her.
Yeah...that's about it. Haha...what crap did I tell her. In future no chances to give her anything on Valentine's. Sounds like I'm dying huh? Well...perhaps I am. Sometimes I wish I am.
Days are passing by like water flowing down the Niagaras. Pretty soon it's graduation, and even sooner will be NS. 2 years. Yes...I give myself 2 years. What if I can't forget her? I know if I can't do it in that 2 years, I never will. Haiz~...
Time to get some sleep. Haven't got much of it lately. Feel so much like crying to sleep, but every single part of me feels so numb. So numb...
[[Valentine's Day]]
The time of the year has come again. Yeah...that dreadful time of the year which they call Valentine's Day. Sometimes I juz detest that St. Valentine or whatever he's called (I don't even know whether he really existed in the first place).
Anywayz...it's my 20th sad and lonely Valentine's. Well...on the other hand, maybe not so lonely. Met Chris juz now for dinner, so I'm not alone this Valentine's, except that I was with a guy. Hahaha...but don't get the wrong idea huh...I'm not gay. =)
Wrote a poem when I was at work juz now. Had nothing much to do, so juz penned something. So there's something special for this year. And here goes...
February 14 is finally here,
I never thought I would come this near.
To spending time with you on Valentine's Day,
But again that chance has slipped away.
Three years of waiting isn't fun,
When each of the three I had been undone.
So once again I'm all by myself,
You should know how I dreaded yesterday when the clock struck twelve.
It's sweet seeing couples strolling on the streets,
But singles like me are made to feel like weeds.
On this day no one likes to be alone,
So I guess the best alternative is to stay at home.
But everyone should have no fears,
For Valentine's has still to come for many years.
So if you've got no date please have no tears,
Cos I know one day someone would treat you so dear.
Happy Valentine's Day~!!
It's been a week~!! Well...I think it's 8 days to be exact. Yeah I know...haven't been updating this blog as often now as I do. Juz feeling too tired to really blog lately. Nothing much to talk about too, since I'm on attachment now.
The day has been really slack. The first time I had absolutely (yes, I do mean absolutely) nothing to do in the office. Slacked through the whole morning until lunch and then came back and read some books. Can't believe I've got through today. Time always crawl by whenever you have nothing to do.
Next week is Chinese New Year~!! Hope everyone will enjoy the well-deserved break. Only working on Monday next week, and that is such a welcome relief. Really need the rest. And of cos the money too. *winkz*
Nothing much going on lately. Haven't been talking to her for a really long time. Maybe it's only a few days, but it feels like years to me...
Oh well...perhaps time and distance really pushes people apart...
Sighz...seems like I've got so much to say to her but don't know where to start. Perhaps she has nothing to say to me anyway. So...
Alrighty...guess I'm done with all the whining. Time to think of something to update the class blog.
